Solar, battery and hot water rebates in Queensland (2026)

Queensland has no live state solar or battery rebate at the time of writing. The Battery Booster closed to new applications in 2024, so households rely on the federal STC discount for solar and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program for batteries. Hot water support should be checked against the Queensland Government's current offers.

Queensland solar rebate 2026

Queenslanders searching for a solar panel rebate in QLD are really looking at the federal STC discount, because the state does not run its own at the time of writing. Queensland is the most solar-rich state by rooftop count, so the STC scheme does most of the work. Zone ratings run from 1.382 across the south-east to 1.536 or higher in parts of the north, so the same 6.6 kW system earns more certificates the further north the postcode sits. With the 5-year deeming period for 2026 installs, a mid-zone system produces around 45 certificates, and a spot price near the $40 ceiling turns that into a four-figure discount. The deeming period drops to 4 years in 2027 and 1 year in 2030.

Queensland battery rebate

The Queensland Battery Booster is closed. It ran with a state subsidy for several years, closed to new applications in 2024, and has not been replaced by an equivalent. What is open is the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program: a CEC-approved, VPP-capable battery between 5 and 100 kWh usable, up to 50 kWh eligible, one per property, on new or existing solar. The discount was roughly 30% at launch. The STC factor is 6.8 per kWh for 2026 installs and steps down to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and 5.2 on 1 July 2027, with a tiered rate for larger capacities since 1 May 2026.

Queensland’s high solar penetration means VPP-capable batteries are a natural fit, but customers should check which VPP programs their battery model supports before signing. See the battery STC pillar and the installer guide to the program.

Heat pump rebate in Queensland

Federal STCs apply to eligible heat pump and solar hot water systems everywhere in Queensland. Some third-party sites list state energy-saver rebates for hot water, but at the time of writing we could not confirm their status or amounts, so do not quote one without checking the Queensland Government page. The hot water STC page and heat pump STCs explained cover the federal calculation.

From the desk: In Queensland the money is mostly federal, which makes the certificate payment the single biggest cash item on a solar job. Crews here run lean and quote fast, so waiting ten business days on STC cash hurts. A desk that locks the rate on lodgement and settles in 24 hours for established partners lets you buy panels for the next job without a credit line. Check today’s rate on /pricing/.

Queensland STC trading for installers

Queensland installers work across two distribution networks: Energex in the south-east and Ergon Energy across regional Queensland, each with its own connection and export rules. The STC claim is lodged with the Clean Energy Regulator as everywhere. Common Queensland issues are cyclone and wind-rating evidence in the north, roof-top photos in harsh midday glare, and additions to existing systems recorded as new installs. The installation type guide and the photo requirements help avoid those. If you are comparing traders, the certificate trader checklist lists what to ask, and you can start trading once you have a shortlist.

Solar rebate in Townsville and North Queensland

Townsville and Cairns get the same federal scheme at the same zone 3 rating as Brisbane, so the STC count per kilowatt is no higher than in the south-east, though the sunshine totals are. Heat, cyclone loading and corrosion matter more than incentives: confirm the wind region on the engineering sign-off, and keep evidence of mounting hardware in the photo set. The Brisbane page, Gold Coast page and Sunshine Coast page cover the south-east.

For the mechanism behind all of this, read the STC trading pillar and the deeming period and zone ratings explainer.

How the Queensland stack works in practice

A typical south-east Queensland household adding a 6.6 kW system and a battery sees two federal discounts and no state top-up. The STC count on the solar is worked out first, then the battery STCs are calculated separately from usable capacity, and both come off the invoice. Because the Battery Booster is closed, quotes that still show a state battery line from 2023 or early 2024 are out of date.

Customers also ask whether a bigger battery always means a bigger discount. Not any more: since 1 May 2026 the larger capacity tiers earn a reduced rate, so a battery sized to the household’s evening load usually beats one sized to the maximum. Your installer should show the discount for two or three capacities side by side.

Queensland feed-in tariffs differ between retailers and between the Energex and Ergon areas, and they are not a rebate, but they change the payback maths. If a customer is weighing battery against a bigger solar array, that comparison belongs in the quote alongside the incentive lines. Remind them that the federal STC discount on solar shrinks each year as the deeming period shortens, so a 2026 install earns more certificates than the same system in 2027.

Questions

Queensland questions, answered

Is there a Queensland battery rebate in 2026?
At the time of writing there is no state battery rebate open in Queensland. The Battery Booster closed to new applications in 2024. Queensland households now use the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which takes roughly 30% off an eligible battery at launch.
What is the Queensland solar rebate in 2026?
The Queensland solar rebate is the federal STC discount. The count rises with system size, most coastal cities including Cairns and Townsville are zone 3, and the 5-year deeming period applies to 2026 installs. Queensland has no separate state panel rebate at the time of writing.
How does the solar panel rebate in QLD work for a typical home?
Your installer creates STCs for the system, converts them to cash through a trader and deducts the value from the invoice. For a 6.6 kW system in the mid zone band that is around 45 certificates, and a little more in the higher-rated northern zones.
Is there a heat pump rebate in QLD?
Federal STCs apply to eligible heat pump hot water systems. Third-party sites list Queensland Government hot water offers, but we could not confirm their status at the time of writing, so check the Queensland Government energy pages before promising a customer a state amount.
Is there a solar rebate in Townsville?
Townsville gets the same federal STC discount as the rest of Queensland. Townsville and Cairns are zone 3, the same rating as Brisbane, so a 6.6 kW system earns about 45 STCs in 2026. Only the far west and north-west of the state sit in higher-rated zones, so look up the postcode. Cyclone-rated mounting is the bigger installation issue.
