This is the list we would run before quoting a battery job. It is not a substitute for the program rules on the DCCEEW and Clean Energy Regulator pages, which govern.
Premises and solar
- Solar PV is installed or being installed at the same premises, of no more than 100 kW, and the battery connects to it. See battery without solar.
- No other battery at that property has already received a discount. The program allows one battery installation per premises; see second battery on the same property.
- The battery is commissioned on or after 1 July 2025. See batteries installed before 1 July 2025.
The battery
- Listed on the Clean Energy Council approved battery list, with a CEC-approved inverter, and VPP-capable. See the CEC list.
- Nominal capacity within 5 kWh to 100 kWh, with certificates created on up to 50 kWh of usable capacity. See nominal versus usable.
- Not a portable battery and not an electric vehicle battery. See vehicle-to-home.
The installer
- You are an accredited installer (SAA) and the battery work follows AS/NZS 5139. See SAA accreditation and AS/NZS 5139.
The numbers
- Usable kWh times the factor for the commissioning period. The factor is 6.8 from 1 May to 31 December 2026, stepping to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and 5.2 on 1 July 2027.
- Tiers since 1 May 2026: the first 14 kWh at 100% of the factor, 14 to 28 kWh at 60%, and 28 to 50 kWh at 15%.
- The result is rounded down to whole certificates. Check with the battery STC calculator.
The paperwork
- Customer signs the STC assignment form. See the STC assignment form.
- Photos meet the evidence rules in force since 1 March 2026. See the battery submission guide.
- Keep the supply and installation records for audit; see how STC audits work.
What this means for installers
Treat this as a living document and re-read the program pages each quarter, because the settings have moved several times since July 2025 (the factor steps, the tiers from 1 May 2026 and the evidence rules from 1 March 2026). Eligibility is rarely the hard part. Evidence is. Our compliance desk pre-checks battery claims before lodgement, so photos, forms and serials are reviewed before anything goes to the regulator. If you want a partner that does that and pays on a known timetable, see /start-trading/ and the battery STCs pillar. For the common failure points across all small-scale claims, read top STC claim rejection reasons.
