Battery STCs and Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Where is the CEC eligible battery list and what does it cover?

Short answer

Batteries must be on the Clean Energy Council approved list and be VPP-capable to earn STCs under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Check the exact model and variant on the install date, and use the usable capacity from the listing.

Written and checked by the Energy Merchants desk · Reviewed 2 October 2026 · For installers

The Clean Energy Council keeps the approved list of batteries for the program, and it is the first thing to check before you quote. A battery that is not on the list does not earn certificates, whatever the brochure says.

What the list tells you

For each approved product, you will find the manufacturer, model, usable capacity and relevant approval details. The usable capacity is the figure that feeds the STC calculation, so use it, not the nameplate or total capacity.

The program conditions beyond the list

Being approved is necessary but not sufficient. Under the program, the battery must also:

  • Have between 5 and 100 kWh of usable capacity, with up to 50 kWh counted for STCs.
  • Be capable of connecting to a virtual power plant.
  • Be installed by an accredited installer.
  • Be one per property, new or alongside existing solar.

Traps

Model variants. A listing can cover one configuration while a similar looking product from the same range is not approved. Firmware or hardware revisions can matter too. Always match the model on the box and the label to the listing, and keep a record of the listing as it stood on the installation date, since the list is updated.

From the desk: screenshot the approved list entry on the day of installation and file it with the job. If a query arises later, that record answers it in seconds.

Evidence

The photos should show the model and serial labels clearly so the product can be matched. New photo and evidence rules applied from 1 March 2026; see the battery photo guide and the battery submission guide.

What this means for installers

Build the list check into your quote process, so unapproved products never reach a customer proposal. Energy Merchants’ compliance desk checks the model, serial and capacity before lodgement, so mismatches are caught before they delay payment. Learn more in the battery STC pillar, the installer guide and the pricing page.

If your customer already owns a battery, it may not qualify for the discount, since the program targets new installations. Ask early so you can set expectations. For retrofits where a battery is added alongside an existing system, make sure the combination of products is compatible and that the evidence shows how they are connected.
