Solar rebate in Wollongong

Wollongong’s solar rebate is the federal STC discount, and the Illawarra is one of the few regional areas with a council-backed group-buy on top. The headline number depends on system size and the postcode’s zone rating, so it helps to see the arithmetic before comparing quotes.

Wollongong (postcode 2500) is in STC zone 3, rated 1.382. Under the 5-year deeming period for 2026 installs, a 6.6 kW system earns 45 certificates (6.6 x 1.382 x 5, rounded down). At the roughly $38 to $40 spot range at the time of writing that is about $1,710 to $1,800 before any trader’s rate, and the deeming period falls to 4 years in 2027 and 1 year in 2030, with the scheme ending on 31 December 2030. Run your own size and postcode through the STC calculator, and confirm the zone for each street, since a few postcodes in the Illawarra and Southern Highlands sit in different bands.

Battery rebate in Wollongong

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program covers CEC-approved, VPP-capable batteries from 5 to 100 kWh usable, with up to 50 kWh eligible, one per property, on new or existing solar. The STC factor is 6.8 per kWh at the time of writing, stepping down to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and 5.2 on 1 July 2027. Since 1 May 2026 the first 14 kWh earns 100% of the factor, 14 to 28 kWh earns 60% and 28 to 50 kWh earns 15%, so a 10 kWh battery earns 68 certificates and a bigger battery earns less per extra kilowatt-hour. The earlier NSW battery incentive moved into the federal program in 2025, so the NSW layer on a battery now is the PDRS incentive for VPP connection. Use the battery STC calculator and the battery STC pillar for the maths and the evidence rules.

What New South Wales adds

NSW does not pay a state rebate on solar panels, so the panel discount here is the federal STC line and nothing else. The state’s contribution comes through certificate schemes. The Energy Savings Scheme (ESCs) and the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PRCs) support hot water and other listed upgrades, and the PDRS carries an incentive for connecting a battery to an approved virtual power plant. The PDRS amount depends on battery capacity and the VPP provider, and NSW does not publish one fixed figure, so ask the installer for it in writing. The NSW page sets out each scheme and keeps the detail in one place. Heat pump hot water can earn federal STCs plus ESCs and PRCs, passed on as a discount. See heat pump STCs explained.

Network, export and approvals

Endeavour Energy is the distributor for Wollongong, Shellharbour and the Southern Highlands. It sets connection and export rules, and installers should lodge the network application and check the approved export limit before quoting, particularly where a street has many existing systems. Keep inverter and panel serial numbers identical on the network application and the STC claim, because a mismatch is a common reason for a query.

Climate, roofs and typical systems

Wollongong has a mild, humid coastal climate, with rain pushed up against the escarpment and more cloud than the Sydney basin. Housing runs from older fibro and brick cottages on the flats to large houses on the Mount Keira and Mount Pleasant slopes, where trees and the escarpment itself can shade a roof through winter afternoons. Salt air reaches well inland in the northern suburbs and along the coast, so corrosion-rated mounting and inverters are worth specifying. Typical systems run 6.6 kW to 10 kW, and batteries appeal to households with evening loads who want to cover the gap after sunset.

Local and council programs

The Illawarra Shoalhaven Joint Organisation’s Community Renewables Program, delivered with ShineHub, has been reported to give households in Wollongong, Kiama, Shellharbour and Shoalhaven a council-backed pathway with education sessions, tailored recommendations and exclusive pricing. Round one was reported to have led to more than 300 installs, and Wollongong council news in March 2026 said the initiative was returning. We could not confirm round-two dates, eligibility or pricing, so check the ISJO or Wollongong City Council page, and treat group-buy pricing as a quote like any other: ask for the STC line and the battery discount line to be itemised.

From the desk: Group-buy and community programs bring a burst of jobs in a short window, and every one of them carries a certificate you have already discounted to the customer. If you install in the Illawarra, make sure the desk buying your STCs pre-checks the batch, locks the rate when you lodge a complete claim and pays on time. See /pricing/ and how it works.

Timing a job in Wollongong

Customers weighing this year against next should know the discount shrinks: the solar deeming period steps down to 4 years in 2027 and the battery factor falls from 6.8 to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and to 5.2 on 1 July 2027. The January 2027 explainer covers what changes, and the installer guide to the battery program covers the paperwork.
