Solar rebates in Sydney: what you can claim in 2026
Sydney households get the federal STC discount on solar at the mid zone rating, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, and NSW's PDRS incentive when a battery joins a virtual power plant. There is no Sydney or NSW panel rebate at the time of writing. Most of Sydney is served by Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.

Solar rebate in Sydney
Sydney’s solar rebate is the federal STC discount, and the number that matters is the zone. Sydney sits in zone 3, rated 1.382, which covers most of the country’s population centres. With the 5-year deeming period for 2026 installs, a 6.6 kW system earns around 45 certificates, roughly $1,700 to $1,800 at the time-of-writing spot range of $38 to $40. The deeming period falls to 4 years in 2027, so the same system will earn fewer in January. For the state-wide rules, including the PDRS and Energy Savings Scheme, see the NSW page.
Networks: Ausgrid, Endeavour and Essential
Which network a Sydney home sits on decides the connection rules, and installers should check before quoting. Ausgrid covers the inner city, north shore, eastern suburbs and Central Coast. Endeavour Energy covers western and south-western Sydney and the Illawarra. Essential Energy covers some fringe areas. Each network has its own export limits and approval timelines, and an inverter size that works in one area may be capped in another. A common pairing is 6.6 kW of panels on a 5 kW inverter, but the network’s limit, not the rebate, sets the ceiling.
Roofs, climate and typical systems
Sydney’s climate is mild, with plenty of sun but more cloud and humidity than Adelaide or Perth. Roofs vary: terraces and semis in the inner suburbs often have small, shaded, east-west planes, while outer-suburban homes have larger tile or metal roofs. Heritage conservation areas can limit panels visible from the street, so check before quoting. Typical residential systems run 6.6 kW to 10 kW, with a growing number paired with a 10 to 13 kWh battery. Strata properties add approvals: the owners corporation usually has to agree before panels go on common roof.
Battery rebate in Sydney
A Sydney battery earns the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, roughly 30% off at launch, for a CEC-approved, VPP-capable battery from 5 to 100 kWh usable, up to 50 kWh eligible, one per property. The STC factor is 6.8 per kWh for 2026 installs and steps down to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and 5.2 on 1 July 2027, with a reduced rate on capacity above 14 kWh since 1 May 2026. NSW adds the PDRS incentive for VPP connection, paid in PRCs. Our battery STC pillar covers the claim.
From the desk: Sydney is the most competitive installer market in the country, and margins are thin. A day or two shaved off certificate payment matters when you are quoting against a dozen rivals. Sydney crews choose a desk on three things: a published rate they can lock on lodgement, 24-hour settlement for established partners, and a named person who answers. See /pricing/.
STC trader in Sydney: what installers should compare
You will see plenty of results for an STC trader in Sydney or near you. The suburb is irrelevant because certificates are lodged with the Clean Energy Regulator and sold online. What differs is the rate, whether it is locked when you lodge, fees, settlement speed and the quality of the pre-check. Use the certificate trader checklist, read how long STC payment should take, and see how it works before moving a batch. When you are ready, start trading.

Council and local programs
At the time of writing we found no Sydney council rebate on solar panels or batteries. Some councils have run bulk-buy or community solar programs in the past, and strata-focused initiatives come and go, so installers should ask customers whether their council is currently running one. Do not promise a local amount unless the customer can show it in writing. What does exist across the city is retailer feed-in offers, which vary widely and affect payback more than any rebate difference between suburbs.
What a good Sydney quote shows
A clear quote separates the lines the customer can verify. It should state the STC count and the value credited, the panel and inverter brands, the network and export limit, the battery’s usable capacity and the discount it earns, and any PDRS incentive tied to a VPP. If the quote bundles them into a single “rebate” figure, the customer cannot check it, and a later change in the STC price or a rejected claim becomes an argument. Installers who itemise tend to have fewer disputes and more referrals, and the discount is simpler to defend if the claim is audited. The top rejection reasons piece shows where claims go wrong.
