Solar and battery rebates in Albury-Wodonga: what you can claim in 2026
Albury-Wodonga straddles the NSW and Victorian border, so the federal STC discount and battery discount apply on both sides while state schemes differ. Albury uses NSW certificate schemes, Wodonga uses Solar Victoria and VEECs, and a different network serves each side.

Solar rebate in Albury-Wodonga
The Murray splits one city into two state systems, and the rebate depends on which bank the roof sits on. The federal numbers are identical in both, because Albury (2640) and Wodonga (3690) are both in zone 3.
Albury-Wodonga (Albury 2640 and Wodonga 3690) is in STC zone 3, rated 1.382. Under the 5-year deeming period for 2026 installs, a 6.6 kW system earns 45 certificates (6.6 x 1.382 x 5, rounded down). At the roughly $38 to $40 spot range at the time of writing that is about $1,710 to $1,800 before any trader’s rate, and the deeming period falls to 4 years in 2027 and 1 year in 2030, with the scheme ending on 31 December 2030. Run your own size and postcode through the STC calculator, and confirm the zone for each street, since a few postcodes in the border region sit in different bands.
Battery rebate in Albury-Wodonga
The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program covers CEC-approved, VPP-capable batteries from 5 to 100 kWh usable, with up to 50 kWh eligible, one per property, on new or existing solar. The STC factor is 6.8 per kWh at the time of writing, stepping down to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and 5.2 on 1 July 2027. Since 1 May 2026 the first 14 kWh earns 100% of the factor, 14 to 28 kWh earns 60% and 28 to 50 kWh earns 15%, so a 10 kWh battery earns 68 certificates and a bigger battery earns less per extra kilowatt-hour. The earlier NSW battery incentive moved into the federal program in 2025, so the NSW layer on a battery now is the PDRS incentive for VPP connection. Use the battery STC calculator and the battery STC pillar for the maths and the evidence rules.
What New South Wales adds
NSW does not pay a state rebate on solar panels, so the panel discount here is the federal STC line and nothing else. The state’s contribution comes through certificate schemes. The Energy Savings Scheme (ESCs) and the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PRCs) support hot water and other listed upgrades, and the PDRS carries an incentive for connecting a battery to an approved virtual power plant. The PDRS amount depends on battery capacity and the VPP provider, and NSW does not publish one fixed figure, so ask the installer for it in writing. The NSW page sets out each scheme and keeps the detail in one place. Heat pump hot water can earn federal STCs plus ESCs and PRCs, passed on as a discount. See heat pump STCs explained.
Wodonga and Victoria
On the Wodonga side, the Victorian schemes apply. Solar Victoria offers a point-of-sale rebate to owner-occupiers and landlords at or under a household income of $150,000 (the cap fell to that figure on 1 July 2026) on a home under the property value cap, and VEEC discounts apply to eligible upgrades such as heat pump water heaters, run by the Essential Services Commission. The Solar Victoria battery loan has closed. The Victoria page has the detail. A quote should name which side of the border it is for.
Network, export and approvals
The two banks have different distributors. Essential Energy serves Albury and the NSW side, and Wodonga and north-eastern Victoria are in AusNet’s area, to our understanding. Third-party sources report a 5 kW per phase export limit for AusNet, with a flexible-exports trial in some areas. Installers working both sides need two connection processes, two sets of export rules and two sets of paperwork, so confirm each address’s distributor before quoting.
Climate, roofs and typical systems
Albury-Wodonga has hot, dry summers and cool, frosty winters in the Murray valley, with the occasional hailstorm and bushfire smoke. Roofs are mostly tile and Colorbond on brick homes, with large unshaded roofs in the newer estates in Thurgoona, Lavington and Baranduda. Hot summer afternoons mean strong cooling loads, and solar offsets them well. Typical systems run 6.6 kW to 10 kW, and many households look at batteries for evening use.
Local and council programs
We did not find an Albury City or Wodonga council rebate on solar or batteries that we could confirm at the time of writing. Ask the customer to check each council’s current programs, and do not promise a local amount without evidence.
From the desk: Border installers hold NSW and Victorian paperwork on the same crew calendar, with different state schemes and different networks. A desk that pre-checks every claim, so a mismatched serial between the network application and the STC claim does not hold up cash, matters more than usual. See /pricing/ and how it works.
Timing a job in Albury-Wodonga
Confirm the property’s state and eligibility before quoting. The Solar Victoria income cap is $150,000, and NSW PDRS battery amounts vary by VPP provider. The solar deeming period falls to 4 years in 2027 and the battery factor to 5.7 on 1 January 2027. The January 2027 explainer covers what changes, and the installer guide to the battery program covers the paperwork.
