Installers in regional centres often carry more cash-flow risk than city operators. Jobs are spread out, a return trip to fix a missing photo costs a half-day, and suppliers want paying on 30-day terms. This page covers installers working in Launceston, Mandurah, Bunbury, Albury-Wodonga, Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Rockhampton and Alice Springs, though the advice holds anywhere.
Why regional claims get stuck
The Clean Energy Regulator and any decent trader check the same things for every claim, wherever the roof is. In regional work the common failures are:
- Photos taken on the way out. If the array, inverter and labels are not captured while you are on site, a return trip is the only fix. Our photo checklist lists what the regulator expects, and the CER reviews geolocation data on photos.
- Serial number mismatches. Panel serials entered by hand from a ute dashboard often differ from the registry. Scan or photograph labels rather than retyping them.
- Assignment forms not returned. The homeowner must sign the STC assignment form, and a regional customer who works shifts or lives off-site can take days.
- Accreditation details. An expired SAA number or mismatched installer, designer or electrician details can hold a claim. Check them before lodging.
A routine that protects cash flow
- Capture on site. Use one photo app, take the full set before packing the ute and check geotags are switched on.
- Sign before you leave. Get the assignment form signed on the day, electronically if the customer prefers.
- Check serials against the registry. Fix mismatches the same day rather than waiting for a rejection.
- Lodge within days. The sooner the claim is in, the sooner the rate is locked and the sooner cash arrives. STCs must be created within 12 months, but there is no benefit in waiting.
- Use a trader that pre-checks. A compliance desk catching a problem in hours beats a registry rejection after two weeks. See why payments run late for the usual causes.
Local notes
Western Australia (Mandurah, Bunbury) and Tasmania (Launceston) have the same federal rules, but when crews travel interstate for work in Albury-Wodonga, remember state electrical licence rules differ: see licence recognition across states. Alice Springs is zone 1 and Launceston is zone 4, so the same system earns a different STC count in each, so use the STC calculator per postcode. Rockhampton, Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Mandurah and Bunbury have their own state-by-state rebate pages under rebates.
What this means for you
Speed is mostly about discipline at the install. If your trader does the pre-check, rate-lock on lodgement and pays fast, the regional location stops mattering. Energy Merchants publishes its daily rate on pricing, locks it when a complete claim is lodged and settles in 24 hours for established partners. If you want to see how a claim moves, read how it works, then start trading when you are ready. Related reading: how long STC payment should take.
