Starting is straightforward if you have your paperwork in order. Most of what you need is things a working installer already has.
The checklist
- ABN and GST status. Traders pay businesses, and many issue a recipient created tax invoice. See RCTI, GST and ABN for STC payments.
- Accreditation. Your relevant accreditation to install, such as Clean Energy Council accreditation, and electrical licensing. Batteries require an accredited installer as part of the program.
- Bank details. For payment, matched to your business name.
- Photo routine. A phone and a checklist, using the photo requirements guide.
- Assignment forms. A signed form for each job, per the assignment form guide.
- A trader. One that fits your volume and cash flow needs.
Choosing the trader
Compare rate, lock, fees and speed. Ask about onboarding: some providers are quick, others take weeks of paperwork. Our trader checklist gives a short list of questions.
Your first claim
Expect extra verification on the first one. At Energy Merchants it takes 48 to 72 hours as we check your details, then you move to 24-hour settlement. Starting with a straightforward job is sensible.
What this means for installers
You can start trading with Energy Merchants in minutes: start trading, and the desk will take it from there. Read how it works, the Partner Program and the pricing page first if you want the detail.
Finally, expect to give a little information up front. Reputable traders verify identity and accreditation because the registry requires accurate details, and it protects you as much as them. Having your documents in one folder, with ABN, licence, accreditation and bank details, usually halves the time to get started.
If you also install batteries or heat pumps, ask at the outset whether the provider handles those certificates too. Using one trader for STCs, battery STCs and VEECs means one onboarding process, one account manager and one set of terms, which is simpler than juggling several providers as your work diversifies. See the battery STC pillar and the VEEC pillar.
