Solar and battery rebates in Bunbury: what you can claim in 2026

Bunbury households use the federal STC discount at zone 3, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount and the WA Residential Battery Scheme, which requires VPP enrolment. Western Power runs the network, and coastal wind, salt air and long rural runs shape installs in the south-west.

Solar rebate in Bunbury

Bunbury is the south-west’s regional hub, with a mix of port, industrial and residential suburbs and a lot of rural land around it. It is further from the Perth trading desks than Mandurah, but the rebates and rules are the same.

Bunbury (postcode 6230) is in STC zone 3, rated 1.382. Under the 5-year deeming period for 2026 installs, a 6.6 kW system earns 45 certificates (6.6 x 1.382 x 5, rounded down). At the roughly $38 to $40 spot range at the time of writing that is about $1,710 to $1,800 before any trader’s rate, and the deeming period falls to 4 years in 2027 and 1 year in 2030, with the scheme ending on 31 December 2030. Run your own size and postcode through the STC calculator, and confirm the zone for each street, since a few postcodes in the south-west sit in different bands.

Battery rebate in Bunbury

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program covers CEC-approved, VPP-capable batteries from 5 to 100 kWh usable, with up to 50 kWh eligible, one per property, on new or existing solar. The STC factor is 6.8 per kWh at the time of writing, stepping down to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and 5.2 on 1 July 2027. Since 1 May 2026 the first 14 kWh earns 100% of the factor, 14 to 28 kWh earns 60% and 28 to 50 kWh earns 15%, so a 10 kWh battery earns 68 certificates and a bigger battery earns less per extra kilowatt-hour. The WA Residential Battery Scheme is the state layer here and requires VPP enrolment; check Energy Policy WA for current amounts. Use the battery STC calculator and the battery STC pillar for the maths and the evidence rules.

What Western Australia adds

WA has no state panel rebate at the time of writing, but it does have a live state battery program: the WA Residential Battery Scheme, launched on 1 July 2025, which adds a rebate and an interest-free loan option on top of the federal discount. Third-party sources report that the battery must be an approved product, fitted by an accredited installer and enrolled in an approved VPP, and that the loan has an income threshold. We could not confirm remaining funding or current amounts, so check Energy Policy WA before telling a customer what they will receive. The WA page has the state detail. Federal STCs apply to eligible heat pump hot water; we found no separate WA hot water rebate. See the hot water STC page.

Network, export and approvals

Western Power runs the network for the south-west, and Synergy is the retailer. Western Power’s rules for new connections changed from 1 May 2026: third-party sources report that new installs choose between full export access, which requires remote disconnection capability, and a fixed 1.5 kW export cap, with inverters on AS/NZS 4777.2 Region B settings and CSIP-AUS communication. Systems installed before 1 May 2026 are reported as unaffected. Confirm the current rules with Western Power or Energy Policy WA before quoting.

Climate, roofs and typical systems

Bunbury has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters, and the coast gets strong afternoon sea breezes. Salt air matters near the Leschenault Estuary and the beaches, so corrosion-rated mounting is sensible. Roofs are mainly Colorbond and tile on brick homes, with large unshaded roofs in the newer estates around Dalyellup and Eaton, and heritage character in parts of the older centre. Typical systems run 6.6 kW to 10 kW, and rural properties further inland often add batteries to ride out outages on long feeders. South-west winters are cloudier than Perth, so size for the annual figure and confirm the battery’s VPP arrangements locally.

Local and council programs

We did not find a City of Bunbury or Shire rebate on solar or batteries that we could confirm at the time of writing. Check the council’s current programs, and do not promise a local amount without evidence.

From the desk: Bunbury installers work long runs between Perth and Busselton, and travel costs make cash flow matter. A desk that locks the rate when you lodge a complete claim and pays quickly keeps the next job funded. See /pricing/ and how it works.

Timing a job in Bunbury

Check the WA Residential Battery Scheme’s remaining funding and eligibility before the customer signs. The federal factor steps down to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and to 5.2 on 1 July 2027, and the solar deeming period falls to 4 years in 2027. The January 2027 explainer covers what changes, and the installer guide to the battery program covers the paperwork. For the mechanism behind certificates, see the STC trading pillar, and for the wider picture start at the rebates hub.
