The federal discount applies wherever you live. The question is what a state adds on top. Here is the position state by state, which can change, so confirm on the official page.
| State or territory | Position at the time of writing |
|---|---|
| Victoria | The Solar Victoria Solar Battery Loan has closed. Federal discount is the main support |
| Queensland | The Battery Booster scheme has closed |
| South Australia | Federal discount is the main support; see the SA page for any residual state program |
| Tasmania | The Energy Saver Loan has closed |
| ACT | Sustainable Household Scheme has supported batteries, mainly through zero-interest loans |
| Northern Territory | The NT battery scheme has closed |
NSW and WA are the states with live incentives that stack; see NSW and WA.
What stacking means in practice
A federal STC discount reduces the invoice. A state grant or rebate normally reduces it further, and a state loan finances the balance. Because they do different jobs, none of these conflicts with the STC assignment. The risks are timing and eligibility: some state programs required approval before purchase, some had a cap and some were first-in, first-served.
Victoria and the household income cap
Victoria’s solar rebate through Solar Victoria had its household income cap lowered to $150,000 on 1 July 2026. That relates to solar panels rather than the federal battery discount, and it is worth knowing so you do not confuse the two. The federal battery discount has no income test.
South Australia and the ACT
SA’s position is on SA home battery scheme and the ACT’s loan is on ACT Sustainable Household Scheme. Both explain what the local programs have offered and how they have sat beside the federal discount.
Other help that is always available
Even where no state program is open, VPP offers from retailers and aggregators can add bill credits or event payments. Finance options are covered in financing a home battery.
What this means for installers
Do not advertise a state incentive without checking that it is open. Quote the federal STC count as a fixed line and treat state or VPP money as extra, with the source named. Battery STCs and pricing cover the federal side, and the battery STC calculator shows the count for any size.
From the desk: old blog posts still advertise closed schemes. If a customer quotes a figure from the web, ask for the government page it came from.
