Battery stacking, VPP and state battery schemes

Is there a South Australian home battery scheme?

Short answer

South Australian households can use the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which gives an STC discount on approved batteries. The state's own battery scheme has been changed since the federal program began, so check the SA Government's official page for what, if anything, still applies.

South Australia was an early leader in home batteries, with a state subsidy that helped thousands of households. Since the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program began on 1 July 2025, much of that support has been overtaken by the national scheme. State programs change often, so read the SA Government’s official page before you rely on any older advice.

What you get from the federal program

An approved battery of 5 to 100 kWh usable capacity earns STCs, with up to 50 kWh counted, at 6.8 per kWh for 2026 installs falling to 5.7 from 1 January 2027 and to 5.2 on 1 July 2027. At launch the discount was about 30 percent of the price. The battery must be on the Clean Energy Council approved list, capable of joining a virtual power plant, installed by an accredited installer and one per property. It works with new or existing solar.

For a typical 13.5 kWh battery in 2026, that is about 91 STCs, worth around $3,450 at roughly $38 per certificate at the time of writing.

What may still apply locally

Beyond the federal discount, local incentives can come from the state government, your network operator or your retailer, often via VPP offers that pay for letting the battery help the grid. These vary a lot and change with little notice. We do not quote amounts, as that would date quickly.

Steps to take

  1. Check the SA Government energy page for current state support.
  2. Compare quotes on net price after the STC discount.
  3. Ask about the VPP options your retailer offers.
  4. Confirm the battery model is on the approved list.
From the desk: if an installer tells you a state subsidy applies, ask for the official reference and the date it applies from. Old advice about SA subsidies is still circulating.

What this means for you

Treat the federal STC discount as the main saving, and see the state and VPP offers as extras to verify. Our battery STC overview, who gets the battery STCs and the certificate glossary explain how the pieces work.

If you are comparing offers from several retailers, look at how long the VPP commitment lasts, what happens if you move, and whether the battery can still be used for backup. A generous payment with a long lock-in may be worth less than a modest one with flexibility, so read the terms carefully before you sign.
