Three brand-led searches here share one answer: the VPP is a choice you make after the battery, and compatibility is something you verify, not assume. We name the brands for orientation only, and we do not quote offers, because they change often.
Amber Electric
Amber is an electricity retailer that passes wholesale prices through to customers and offers battery optimisation for compatible batteries. Its approach rewards customers who shift energy to match wholesale prices. Compatibility depends on the battery and inverter model, and Amber lists the products it supports. Because the retailer relationship affects your tariffs, treat it as a retail decision, and compare it with your current plan including supply charges.
The federal STC discount does not depend on the retailer. For NSW customers, the PDRS incentive for VPP connection has been offered through some VPP providers, so ask whether the provider handles it.
Tesla Powerwall
Powerwall is widely sold in Australia and is approved for the program in current versions (check the CEC listing for the exact model). Tesla has offered its own VPP-style options, and several Australian retailers have had Powerwall programs. Which are open to new customers depends on your state and network, so ask the retailer for the current terms. Our page on the Powerwall 3 rebate covers the approval and the dollars.
Sungrow
Sungrow batteries are sold under many installer brands and are supported by a number of retailers and VPP operators. A common mistake is assuming that because one Sungrow battery works with a retailer, all do. Models and inverters differ. Ask for the compatible-products list and match your exact model.
How to check any combination
- Confirm the battery and inverter are on the CEC list (how to check).
- Ask the operator for their current compatible list in writing.
- Compare the offer: credits, term, exit fee, tariff.
- Ask the battery manufacturer about the warranty with that operator.
What this means for homeowners
You can take the rebate first and choose the VPP second. If the offer you want does not support your battery, you have not lost the rebate. See our pillar page on battery STCs and the stacking explainer.
What this means for installers
Selling a brand on VPP compatibility is a promise you may have to keep. Confirm in writing before you quote. For the certificates, a clean claim lodged with us is pre-checked by the compliance desk and priced at the rate on /pricing/; see /start-trading/ to set up.
Two quick points
Does a retailer’s battery program replace the VPP? In practice the two overlap. Some retailers run their own battery optimisation or VPP-style program, so the retail plan and the VPP can be one contract. Read it as one agreement, including the tariff, supply charge and exit terms.
Will the offer you see online still be there next month? Not reliably. Credits and compatibility lists are revised often, which is why we do not quote them and why you should ask for the offer in writing on the day you decide.
