Solar and battery rebates in Launceston: what you can claim in 2026
Launceston households use the federal STC discount at zone 4, the lowest rating, and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, since the Tasmanian Energy Saver Loan Scheme closed in September 2025. TasNetworks runs the network, and cold winters and valley shade shape installs.

Solar rebate in Launceston
Launceston earns fewer certificates per kilowatt than any mainland city, because Tasmania sits in the lowest-rated STC zone. The discount is smaller, but it still takes a real amount off the bill, and heating-heavy households benefit from sizing carefully.
Launceston (postcode 7250) is in STC zone 4, rated 1.185. Under the 5-year deeming period for 2026 installs, a 6.6 kW system earns 39 certificates (6.6 x 1.185 x 5, rounded down). At the roughly $38 to $40 spot range at the time of writing that is about $1,482 to $1,560 before any trader’s rate, and the deeming period falls to 4 years in 2027 and 1 year in 2030, with the scheme ending on 31 December 2030. Run your own size and postcode through the STC calculator, and confirm the zone for each street, since a few postcodes in northern Tasmania sit in different bands.
Battery rebate in Launceston
The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program covers CEC-approved, VPP-capable batteries from 5 to 100 kWh usable, with up to 50 kWh eligible, one per property, on new or existing solar. The STC factor is 6.8 per kWh at the time of writing, stepping down to 5.7 on 1 January 2027 and 5.2 on 1 July 2027. Since 1 May 2026 the first 14 kWh earns 100% of the factor, 14 to 28 kWh earns 60% and 28 to 50 kWh earns 15%, so a 10 kWh battery earns 68 certificates and a bigger battery earns less per extra kilowatt-hour. Tasmania’s Energy Saver Loan Scheme has closed, so the federal discount is the only battery incentive at the time of writing. Use the battery STC calculator and the battery STC pillar for the maths and the evidence rules.
What Tasmania adds
Tasmania has no state solar or battery rebate at the time of writing. The Energy Saver Loan Scheme closed in September 2025 and we found no replacement. The state-level lever is the regulated minimum feed-in tariff, set each year by the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator. Third-party sources put it at about 9.3 cents per kWh for 2026-27, but check the regulator’s current determination, and ask which retailer the customer uses because retailers can offer more than the minimum. The Tasmania page has the state detail. Federal STCs apply to eligible heat pump hot water. See the hot water STC page.
Network, export and approvals
TasNetworks is the distributor for Launceston and northern Tasmania. It sets connection and export requirements, and installers should lodge the network application and check the approved export limit before quoting. Tasmania also has a regulated minimum feed-in tariff, which third-party sources put at about 9.3 cents per kWh for 2026-27, but check the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator’s current determination.
Climate, roofs and typical systems
Launceston has a cool temperate climate in the Tamar Valley, with cold, foggy winters and mild summers. Valley inversions can hold fog over the city on winter mornings, and winter days are short, so output is lowest when heating demand is highest. Houses range from Victorian and Federation brick in the older suburbs, where heritage overlays can restrict street-facing panels, to newer estates. Many homes use electric or heat pump heating, which makes the load profile winter-heavy. Typical systems run 5 kW to 10 kW, and a smaller array paired with efficient heating and hot water can pay back faster than a large one. Tasmania has a small VPP market, so ask whether a battery’s VPP options operate in the state.
Local and council programs
We found no Launceston City Council rebate on solar or batteries that we could confirm at the time of writing. Ask the customer whether the council is offering anything, and check Energy Tasmania pages for any hardship or concession scheme.
From the desk: Small markets mean small batches, and some traders treat a ten-system claim as an annoyance. Launceston installers do best with a desk that settles small and large claims on the same terms, charges no fees and has a named account manager. See /pricing/ and how it works.
Timing a job in Launceston
Zone matters here: the wrong zone is a common cause of rejected claims, and 1.185 must be applied correctly. The deeming period falls to 4 years in 2027 and the battery factor to 5.7 on 1 January 2027. The January 2027 explainer covers what changes, and the installer guide to the battery program covers the paperwork. For the mechanism behind certificates, see the STC trading pillar, and for the wider picture start at the rebates hub.
