STC audit status

STC audit status is the label the REC Registry shows against a creation to indicate whether it has been reviewed by the Clean Energy Regulator and with what result. Typical states are not audited, pending audit, passed and failed.

Audit status is the field in the registry that tells you where a creation stands in the regulator’s review. It matters because it affects whether the STCs can be sold, and to whom.

The usual states

The wording depends on the registry view, but the idea is consistent. A creation may be not selected for audit, pending audit while evidence is being checked, passed when the review is satisfied, or failed when it is not. Check your own registry account for the exact labels.

In practice

Most claims never see a documentary audit. Some are selected at random and some because of a risk flag, such as an unusual system size or a repeat pattern in the data. When one is selected, it sits in a pending state until the regulator has what it needs. A trader may hold payment on a pending creation, or pay and take the risk, depending on the contract.

Passing is the cleanest outcome. See how STC audits work for what evidence is typically requested.

Worked example

You lodge 80 STCs. The registry shows them as pending audit. You upload the photos and the compliance certificate within the regulator’s deadline. Several days later the status moves to passed, and settlement proceeds.

Common confusion

Audit status is not the same as the creation status. A creation can be registered and pending audit at the same time. And a pass today does not give permanent immunity. The regulator can examine installations after the fact within its powers.

Do not confuse the regulator’s audit with a trader’s pre-check or a state inspection of electrical work. They are three different checks by three different bodies. See STC validation.

From the desk. Keep the full job file, not a subset. An audit asks for what you did not expect.
