STC assignment form

An STC assignment form is the signed document in which the owner of a small-scale system assigns the right to create the system's STCs to another party, usually the installer or a certificate trader, in exchange for an upfront discount on the system.

The STC assignment form is the document that moves the right to create certificates from the person who owns the system to someone else. Without it, the owner is the only person entitled to claim the STCs, and the installer has no basis for giving the upfront discount.

In plain words: the customer agrees to hand the certificates over, and in return gets the discount on their invoice.

What it shows

A complete form identifies the system owner, the installation address, the system details and the party receiving the assignment. It carries the owner’s signature and date, and it often has a declaration that the owner has not already claimed or assigned the certificates elsewhere. Our assignment form guide has the detail.

In practice

The form is signed at or before installation, and it is one of the first things a trader’s compliance team checks. Two errors cause most delays: details that do not match the rest of the claim (an address spelt differently from the registry entry, or a wrong system size), and missing or mismatched signatures.

A good habit is to complete the form from the same source data as the claim, so serials, size and address all come from one place. If a customer later disputes the assignment, a clean, dated form is the main evidence you have.

Common confusion

An assignment form is not the same as an installer written statement, which is a statement by the installer about the installation. They are both on the file and they check different things. See installer written statement.

It is also not the contract or the invoice. The customer’s quote might mention the STC discount, but the form is what legally transfers the rights.

The word “assignment” also appears when a trader or registered agent is appointed. The assignment is a transfer of the rights to claim, whereas the agent relationship is about who acts in the registry. See registered agent definition.

From the desk. If the owner cannot sign, such as a business or a property with multiple owners, check who has authority before you proceed. A form signed by the wrong person is a form that fails.
