AS/NZS 4777.2

AS/NZS 4777.2 is the Australian and New Zealand standard for grid-connection of energy systems via inverters. It sets the inverter's required behaviour, including voltage response modes and protection settings, so solar and battery systems stay stable on the network.

AS/NZS 4777.2 is the standard that says how an inverter must behave when it is connected to the grid. It is the inverter-requirements part of the 4777 series. Part 1 covers the installation requirements, and the 2020 revision of part 2 added tighter response settings.

Inverters are tested to it and listed against it. For the network operator the aim is simple: thousands of rooftop systems should not push voltage out of range or fail in ways that cascade.

What it requires

  • Anti-islanding protection, so the inverter shuts down when the grid goes down, unless it is a designed backup mode.
  • Voltage response modes, volt-var and volt-watt, which adjust reactive and real power when local voltage rises.
  • Frequency response and ride-through settings.
  • Regional setting profiles, with Australia A, B and C applying across different networks, which the installer selects at commissioning.

In practice

Installers meet 4777.2 as a commissioning step. The inverter must be set to the profile the distributor requires, and the connection application usually records it. See grid connection application. Getting the region wrong is a classic reason for a distributor to bounce a job.

For the certificate claim, the inverter must be on the approved list with a compliant model, and the paperwork must match the equipment on site. The STC photo requirements cover the inverter label shot.

Common confusion

4777.2 is not AS/NZS 5139. One is how the inverter talks to the grid. The other is how a battery is safely installed. A hybrid inverter and battery job needs both. See hybrid inverter.

It is also not a flexible export scheme. A dynamic operating envelope is a network signal, and the inverter must be capable of responding to it, which is a separate requirement.

From the desk. Record the regional setting you selected on the job sheet. If the distributor queries it months later, you will have the answer.
