Are bifacial, flexible, thin film and roof tile panels STC eligible?

Short answer

Panel technology does not matter; the specific model has to be on the Clean Energy Council approved list on the installation date. Bifacial and thin film modules are listed in many cases. Flexible panels and solar roof tiles are more often unlisted, so check each model first.

Eligibility is a listing question, not a technology question. The scheme looks for a model on the CEC list, so “bifacial” or “thin film” is not an automatic yes or no.

Are bifacial panels STC eligible

Yes, where the model is listed, and many are. The system’s STCs are calculated from rated capacity in kW, the zone rating and the deeming period. Any extra rear-side generation gives the owner more electricity but no extra certificates. Use the STC calculator with the panel’s rated output.

Are thin film panels STC eligible

Some thin film modules are listed and some are not. They are less common in Australian rooftop solar, so the lists are shorter. Search the exact model.

Are flexible solar panels STC eligible

Usually the answer is no, because most flexible panels sold in Australia, particularly lightweight ones for vans and boats, are not on the CEC list, and they are often not intended for fixed rooftop installation. If a model is not listed on the installation date, it cannot support STCs. An off-grid or mobile setup also raises separate questions about whether the system counts as a small generation unit at all.

Are solar roof tiles STC eligible

Integrated roof tiles can qualify if the product is listed and the installation is compliant. They bring extra checks: waterproofing and roofing standards, and a roofer or builder as well as a solar installer. The STC check itself is the same: the model must be on the list on installation day.

A quick method for any unusual product

  1. Get the full model number from the manufacturer.
  2. Search the CEC PV module list.
  3. If it is not there, ask the manufacturer whether an application is in progress.
  4. Do not quote STCs until the listing exists.

Roof tile and flexible products also tend to have shorter track records, so warranty terms and installer experience deserve a harder look than the STC calculation does. A discount that disappears because the product is unlisted costs far more than a conventional panel would have.

From the desk: an unusual panel type means a customer who has fallen for the product. Tell them early, in writing, if STCs are not available, rather than discovering it at claim time.

What this means for installers

For specialty products, listing is your first check and your photo evidence is the second. The model label must be readable; see STC photo requirements. Our page on what happens if panels are removed from the list covers the dates.

What this means for homeowners

If you have your heart set on a particular product, ask whether it is listed before you pay a deposit. The discount can be worth thousands. For how the certificates behind it work, see STC trading; installers can see rates on pricing.

Follow-up questions

People also ask

Are flexible solar panels STC eligible?
Only if the exact model is on the CEC panel list. Many flexible panels sold for caravans and boats are not.
Are solar roof tiles STC eligible?
Only if the specific product is listed. Check the listing, and the install standard, before quoting.
Do bifacial panels earn extra STCs for rear-side output?
No. STCs are based on the system's rated capacity, the zone and the deeming period, not on real-world yield.
